The number on a sign is a legal ceiling. At the same time, a safe speed changes with visibility, traffic, the road surface, and the presence of pedestrians. The debate fails when it merges the two concepts or turns one statistic into an automatic verdict for every road.
1. What Can Be Substantiated
For 2025, the police recorded 11,421 crashes in which speed inappropriate for the conditions was listed as the main cause. These crashes killed 124 people.[1]
In the police classification, speed inappropriate for the conditions does not automatically mean exceeding the maximum permitted speed. A driver may be below the limit and still be traveling too fast for the conditions.[1]
Kinetic energy increases with the square of speed. An increase from 50 to 60 kilometers per hour therefore means approximately 44 percent more energy for a collision or the brakes to absorb.[2]
2. How to Read the Claims in Context
The same change in a speed limit does not have the same meaning on a divided highway and outside a school. The traffic mix, intersections, pedestrians, guardrails, visibility, and the ability to enforce the rule all matter.
A blanket statement that “higher limits kill” or “lower limits do not work” skips the most important step: what happened to actual speeds and exposure after a specific change. Without before-and-after measurement, we do not know whether the sign changed behavior.
A police finding on cause is the outcome of investigating a specific crash, not an experiment. It is useful for description, but by itself it does not isolate the effect of the statutory limit from infrastructure and driver behavior.

- Is there a comparable road section or period without the intervention?
4. Conclusion
Road safety is not a contest of slogans about thirty and one hundred fifty. A sound decision combines physics, local traffic, measurements of actual speeds, and an evaluation of the specific intervention.
